Teaching Sound Isolation, Grade 1

Objective:

The students will be able to isolate the beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words.

Introduce the sound in beginning, end, and finally middle.

Example:

/t/ 

Isolating the beginning sound of toast, tickle, and time.

1.The beginning sound is /t/

Using "Old McDonald Had a Farm," ask the students what is the beginning sound and reinforce with

"with /t/, /t/ here and a /t/, /t/ there,

here a /t/, there a /t/,

everywhere a /t/, /t/.

2.  Next isolate in ending position.

3.  Finally isolate in middle position.  This is the hardest for students to isolate; therefore, it is introduced last.
